In an era increasingly dominated by technology and mass production, designer Kateryna Malikova is championing the timeless beauty of craftsmanship. Through the intricate art of macramé, she transforms delicate threads into striking works of wearable art—pieces that celebrate femininity, movement, and individuality. Blending traditional hand-knotting techniques with a distinctly modern sensibility, her creations blur the boundaries between fashion, sculpture, and self-expression.
Inspired by emotion, intuition, and the unique stories of the women who wear her designs, Kateryna approaches fashion as a deeply personal form of storytelling. Each handcrafted piece reflects a commitment to artistry, authenticity, and the belief that clothing should do more than adorn the body—it should empower, inspire, and reveal something of the wearer’s inner world.
We spoke with the designer about her creative journey, the inspiration behind her latest collection, the future of fashion, and why craftsmanship remains more relevant than ever.
N.N How did your journey into fashion design begin?
KM My journey into fashion began with an unexpected fascination: the art of macramé. What first captivated me was not only the technique itself, but its endless potential for transformation. I discovered that macramé could move far beyond traditional décor and become a medium for creating sculptural garments, intricate accessories, statement jewelry, and wearable works of art.
From the very beginning, I was drawn to the idea of creating pieces that tell a story. Every knot, texture, and silhouette becomes part of a larger narrative—one that reflects a woman’s individuality, confidence, and inner world. My work is not simply about craftsmanship; it is about translating emotion into form and transforming threads into expressions of beauty and identity.
Creativity has accompanied me for as long as I can remember. As a child, I spent hours designing unique wardrobes for my dolls, imagining worlds where every piece was entirely one of a kind. What began as a playful passion gradually evolved into a lifelong calling and, ultimately, into my own brand.
Today, I dedicate my work to reimagining macramé through a contemporary lens, merging traditional hand-knotting techniques with modern femininity. My goal is to demonstrate that macramé is not merely a craft, but a sophisticated artistic language with a rightful place in contemporary fashion.
N.N. Tell us about your latest collection.
KM My latest collection is an exploration of evening glamour through the lens of artisanal craftsmanship. It celebrates the intersection of elegance, movement, and modern femininity, expressed through intricately hand-knotted macramé gowns.
Each piece is created using delicate one-millimeter cords, woven together in multiple layers to achieve remarkable depth, texture, and fluidity. I was particularly fascinated by the interplay between structure and lightness—the ability of handcrafted techniques to create garments that feel both sculptural and effortlessly dynamic.
A defining element of the collection is its dramatic fringe. Long, fluid, and expressive, it transforms every movement into a visual performance, creating a sense of rhythm and freedom. Shimmering threads woven throughout the designs catch the light and lend each look a luminous quality, enhancing the collection’s celebratory spirit.
At its heart, this collection is dedicated to women who embrace visibility, confidence, and self-expression. More than creating dresses, I wanted to create an emotional experience—a feeling of radiance, empowerment, and unapologetic femininity.

N.N. Where do you find inspiration for your designs?
KM Inspiration arrives from many places: music, movement, emotion, the beauty of women, and the quiet moments of observation that often go unnoticed. Yet I also believe that creativity transcends technical skill alone. For me, it feels deeply connected to something larger—a gift that allows us to perceive beauty in unique ways and share it with the world.
Many ideas appear almost intuitively, as though they already exist somewhere beyond conscious thought. My role is simply to listen, to recognize them, and to bring them into reality through texture, silhouette, and detail.
What inspires me most is the transformative power of fashion. Knowing that a piece can help a woman feel more confident, more expressive, or more connected to herself gives purpose to every creative endeavor. In those moments, fashion becomes more than design—it becomes a form of emotional storytelling.
N.N. What challenges do you encounter during the creative process?
KM Like every creative, I am familiar with moments of uncertainty. Sometimes an idea appears perfectly formed in my imagination, yet the process of bringing it to life reveals unexpected directions. There are occasions when I spend countless hours developing a piece, only to realize that it does not fully embody the emotion or vision I intended to express.
In those moments, I am never afraid to begin again. True craftsmanship requires patience, honesty, and a willingness to let go of what is merely good in pursuit of what feels truly right. For me, the creative process is not about perfection—it is about authenticity.
Another challenge lies in sourcing materials. Because my work relies on texture, movement, and subtle variations in color and thread, finding the perfect elements can be a journey in itself. Yet I believe challenges are often invitations to innovate. They push me to explore new possibilities and ultimately strengthen the final result.
At its core, creativity is an act of faith. When passion guides the process, obstacles become part of the story rather than barriers to it.

N.N. How important are storytelling and self-expression in your work?
KM Storytelling is at the heart of everything I create. I have never viewed fashion as purely decorative; for me, it is a language capable of communicating emotion, identity, and personal truth.
Each handcrafted piece carries its own narrative. The hours of meticulous work, the rhythm of every knot, the movement of fringe, and the dialogue between texture and silhouette all contribute to a story that extends beyond the garment itself. Through these details, I seek to express qualities such as freedom, confidence, sensuality, softness, and inner strength.
What fascinates me most is how each woman interprets that story differently. One may wear a piece as a symbol of bold self-expression, while another may find in it a reflection of her quiet elegance. In that way, the design becomes a collaboration between creator and wearer.
Fashion has the unique ability to tell stories without words, and that silent conversation is what continues to inspire me.
